What it is

The Leaky Cauldron is a large, dark, low-beamed inn straddling the wall between the London waterfront and Diagon Alley, and it is the only substantial kitchen inside the land. You order at a counter, are given a table number, and the food is brought out to you — a hybrid model that works better than either pure quick-service or table service in a room this busy.

The cooking is a genuine step above what a theme park counter usually produces. The bangers and mash, the fisherman's pie and the cottage pie are all properly made British pub plates, served hot, in portions large enough to be a real meal. The Ploughman's platter of cheeses, meats and pickles is designed to be shared and is the best-value thing on the menu for two people.

It is also the busiest bottleneck in the land. From noon until two the queue runs out of the door and the seating rooms are full, and the two of those together mean a forty-minute round trip for lunch. Eat at 11:15 or after 2:15 and the same meal takes fifteen minutes.

Our verdict

The best food in this park and among the best quick-service at any Orlando theme park. Worth eating at twice on a trip, provided you go at a shoulder hour rather than at noon.

Tips for The Leaky Cauldron

  • Eat at 11:15 or after 2:15. Between noon and two this is the single worst queue in the park for what you get.
  • The Ploughman's platter is the best value on the menu and feeds two people comfortably.
  • Butterbeer is available at the counter here, so you do not have to queue separately at the Hopping Pot for it.
  • The back seating rooms are dimmer, cooler and much quieter than the front. Walk past the first room you see.
  • Breakfast is served here and is one of the few sit-down breakfasts inside the gates, which makes it a good use of Early Park Admission after you have ridden Gringotts.

Prices we have checked ourselves, with the month we checked them. Mark anything here and it saves to your device.

Bangers and Mash

The Leaky Cauldron

$19.99

Two large sausages on mashed potato with onion gravy and peas, served hot on a proper plate at a counter-service price.

Our take: The best plate of food at Universal Orlando and it is not close. Properly made, properly hot, and cheaper than most of the burgers in this park. Order it and stop reading the rest of the board.

Do not leave without it Savory

Fisherman's Pie

The Leaky Cauldron

$19.99

White fish and shellfish in a cream sauce under a mashed potato crust, baked and served in its own dish.

Our take: The pick if somebody else in your party has already ordered the bangers and mash. Rich enough that you will not want a dessert afterwards, which at these prices is a saving.

Cottage Pie

The Leaky Cauldron

$19.99

Minced beef in gravy under a mashed potato crust, baked and served hot in a dish with a side salad.

Our take: The safe order and the least interesting of the three pies. Fine, filling and the right choice for a child who will not eat fish or sausage.

Savory

Ploughman's Platter

The Leaky Cauldron

$24.99

A board of British cheeses, cured meats, bread, pickles, chutney and a Scotch egg, built to be picked at by two people.

Our take: The best value on the menu for a couple, and it can be ordered without the meat. Two people eat properly for less than two separate mains and get the more interesting food.

Traditional English Breakfast

The Leaky Cauldron

$17.99

Eggs, sausage, black pudding, baked beans, grilled tomato, sauteed mushrooms and toast on one plate, served in the morning only.

Our take: The best sit-down breakfast inside the gates and the correct thing to do with the second half of an Early Park Admission hour. Ride Gringotts first, then eat this while the park fills up outside.

Breakfast

Sticky Toffee Pudding

The Leaky Cauldron

$6.99

A small dark sponge cake soaked in toffee sauce, served cold in a cup rather than hot in a bowl.

Our take: Better than a seven-dollar theme park dessert has any obligation to be, and easily shared. Order it with the bangers and mash and split it two ways.

Butterbeer Potted Cream

The Leaky Cauldron

$6.99

A small pot of set butterscotch custard with a cream layer on top, eaten cold with a spoon.

Our take: The most intense version of the Butterbeer flavour and the one most likely to defeat you. Good, and one pot between two people is the right amount.

The Leaky Cauldron: common questions

What should you order at the Leaky Cauldron?

The bangers and mash or the fisherman's pie, both of which are properly made and hot. For two people sharing, the Ploughman's platter is the best value on the menu. The sticky toffee pudding and the Butterbeer potted cream are the two desserts worth ordering.

Does the Leaky Cauldron take reservations?

No. It is a counter-order location where you are given a table number and food is brought to you. The way to manage it is timing rather than booking: arrive before 11:30 or after 2:15 and the whole process takes a fraction of the time.

Can you get Butterbeer at the Leaky Cauldron?

Yes, at the counter with your meal, which saves queueing separately at the Hopping Pot outside. Cold and frozen are both usually available, and the frozen version holds up better if you are sitting down to eat.

Is there a vegetarian option at the Leaky Cauldron?

Yes, and more than a token one. There is a vegetarian main plate on the menu alongside the Ploughman's platter, which can be built without meat on request. Gluten-free options are also available; ask at the counter rather than assuming from the board.
