Universal Orlando is now a three-park destination, and that changed the trip. For two decades it was a two-park add-on you did in a day and a half while visiting somewhere else. Epic Universe, which opened in May 2025 on a separate campus a short drive south, is a full-size park in its own right, and the resort now genuinely needs three to four days.

The two original parks — Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure — sit either side of the CityWalk entertainment district and are close enough to walk between in about ten minutes. The Hogwarts Express train connects them, and riding it requires a park-to-park ticket, which is the single most consequential ticket decision you will make here.

The defining difference from the Disney parks down the road is intensity. Universal's headline attractions skew toward high-motion simulators and serious roller coasters, and the height requirements are correspondingly stricter. A family whose youngest is under 40 inches will find far more to do at Magic Kingdom than at Islands of Adventure, and pretending otherwise is how a trip goes wrong.

The practical bits

Getting there
Orlando International (MCO) is about 20 minutes away, closer than it is to Walt Disney World. Universal runs no free airport shuttle; a rental car, a rideshare, or a paid shuttle service are the options.
Getting around
The two original parks and CityWalk are walkable. Epic Universe is on a separate campus and needs the resort shuttle bus or a car. Several hotels connect by water taxi or a garden walkway, which is a genuine quality-of-life difference worth choosing a hotel over.
How many days
Three park days is the honest minimum now that Epic Universe exists. Two days covers the two original parks at a rush. Four lets you repeat the headliners, which at Universal is more of the point than it is elsewhere.
Express Pass, and whether to buy it
Express Pass is included with a stay at the three top-tier hotels for every guest in the room, for the whole stay. On a busy day for a family of four, the premium on those hotels can be less than buying Express Pass separately. That calculation is the single highest-value thing to work out before booking.

Express Pass here

Universal sells Universal Express Pass, a paid front-of-line product, and includes it with a stay at three of its hotels. That inclusion is the resort's most distinctive value proposition and the thing worth doing the arithmetic on before booking anything.
