Universal parking and transport costs, and when not to bring a car at all
Parking is a per-car per-day charge at both Universal resorts and it is the line item most trip budgets forget entirely, which for a week in Orlando adds up to more than a day's admission.

Parking bands describe charges observed as of July 2026 and are wide because both resorts step parking pricing up on peak dates. The historical evening self-parking waiver at Universal Orlando is described on the page as unverified for the current cycle and is deliberately not stated as policy. Rideshare figures are typical fares rather than quotes and move with surge pricing. Metro fares are the published single ride and daily cap at the time of checking.

Parking is the line item nobody budgets
Both resorts charge per car per day, and the charge does not fall on a multi-day visit. A four-day Orlando trip with a rental car adds a meaningful sum in parking alone before you have bought anything else, and it is the most consistently forgotten item in a Universal budget.
In Orlando the two campuses are separate. Epic Universe sits on its own campus a short drive from the original parks, and paying to park at one does not automatically cover the other on the same day. Anyone planning to move between campuses by car should check what their parking payment actually covers before doing it twice.
Universal Orlando has historically not charged for self-parking after a set hour in the evening, which if it still applies makes a CityWalk dinner materially cheaper than a park day. We are not stating it as current policy because we have not verified it for this cycle, and it is exactly the kind of perk that gets withdrawn quietly.
When not to bring a car at all
At Universal Studios Hollywood, if you are staying anywhere near the Metro B Line, do not drive. The line stops at Universal City with a free shuttle up the hill, the fares are trivial next to a day of parking, and Los Angeles traffic around the Cahuenga Pass at the end of a park day is genuinely unpleasant.
At Universal Orlando the answer depends on whether you are staying on site. On-site guests can reach the two original parks and CityWalk on foot, by walkway or by water taxi, and a resort shuttle bus runs to Epic Universe, so a car earns its parking charge only if you intend to leave the resort. Off-site guests generally need one.
The airport question differs by coast. Orlando International is about twenty minutes away and Universal runs no free shuttle, so a rideshare each way often beats a rental plus parking on a short trip. In Los Angeles, Burbank is close enough that the same logic applies with a smaller fare, and Los Angeles International rarely is.
Which parking upgrade is worth buying
In Hollywood, the front gate or preferred parking upgrade is the one parking purchase at either resort we would genuinely consider. The park is on a hillside, the general structures involve a walk and an escalator ride, and on a hot afternoon at the end of a long day that walk is the worst part of it.
In Orlando the case is much weaker. The moving walkways from the garages to CityWalk are long regardless of which row you parked in, so the preferred upgrade shortens the garage portion and not the rest. In July it buys a few minutes out of the sun; in February it buys almost nothing.
Valet in Orlando is worth pricing for an evening at CityWalk specifically, where a short-duration rate can undercut a full day of self-parking. For a full park day it is an expensive convenience rather than a saving.
How to pay less
- Take the Metro B Line to Universal Studios Hollywood if you are staying anywhere near it. The station has a free shuttle to the park entrance, the fare is a rounding error against a day of parking, and it removes the Cahuenga Pass traffic from the end of your day. This is the largest transport saving available at either resort.
- Check whether your annual or season pass includes parking before paying for it separately. Middle and upper tiers at both resorts usually do, and for anyone visiting more than a handful of times that benefit is worth more than the food and merchandise discount that gets advertised alongside it.
- Price a rideshare each way against a rental plus parking on a short Orlando trip. Orlando International is about twenty minutes from the resort and there is no free shuttle. For a three-day on-site stay where you do not intend to leave the resort, two rideshares beat a rental car and three days of parking comfortably.
- Skip the preferred parking upgrade in Orlando and consider it in Hollywood. The Orlando moving walkways are long whichever row you park in, so the upgrade shortens the least tiring part of the walk. Hollywood's hillside layout means the same upgrade genuinely shortens the climb, which matters most in summer and with small children.
- Check what your parking payment covers before driving between the two Orlando campuses. Epic Universe is on its own campus a short drive from the original parks, and paying at one does not automatically cover the other on the same day. Working this out at the second gate is how a day acquires a second parking charge.
- Fly into Burbank rather than Los Angeles International for a Universal Studios Hollywood trip if the fare difference is modest. Burbank is close enough that the rideshare fare is small, while the Los Angeles International trip can take an hour in traffic and costs several times as much, which frequently erases the cheaper airfare.
